Using Virtual Data Resource Templates

Cloud Elements provides a library of virtual data resource (VDR) templates you can use to help more quickly transform fields provided by some of the most frequently used types of elements into single, normalized resources. For more information about VDRs and how to utilize and create them, see Introduction to Virtual Data Resources and Creating Virtual Data Resources.

To use a VDR template, you have to clone it from the VDR Templates catalog into a new VDR, select your elements and services, and edit the fields. See Cloning a VDR Template to learn more.

Accessing the VDR Template Catalog

  1. Log in to Cloud Elements and navigate to the Virtual Data Resources page.
  2. On the Virtual Data Resources Catalog page, click the Resource Templates tab.
  3. Hover over a VDR template and do one of the following:
    • Click Overview to see the VDR's description, fields, and data types.
    • Click Mappings to clone the VDR, or to see the VDR's name and URL, system level fields, and mapped elements.

VDR Overview tab

On this tab, you can view the following information about the VDR template:

Section
Definition
NameThe name of the VDR. You cannot edit the name of a VDR template, but you can clone the template into a new VDR and give it a custom name.
DescriptionA description of the VDR's functionality and purpose
Mapped ElementsIcons indicating the elements the VDR is pre-mapped to
Fields and Data Types tableThe fields mapped to the elements included in the VDR

VDR Mappings tab

On this tab, you can clone the VDR template and view the following information about it:

Section
Definition
VDR Name and URLThe name of the VDR and the URL path where it is accessed
System Level FieldsThe fields mapped at the system level of the VDR. When cloning a VDR template, you can select the level at which the system level fields will be set. See Cloning a VDR Template to learn more.
Mapped ElementsElement cards indicating the element instances premapped to in the VDR template. To see which system level fields of the element the VDR template will transform, hover over an element card and click View.

Cloning a VDR Template

  1. Navigate to the Mappings tab of the VDR template and click Clone.
  2. Search for and select the elements you want to include in the VDR, and then click Next. You can also click the check box next to the Element Name column header to select all listed elements.
  3. Select the level at which the system fields should be created in the VDR, and then click Next.
  4. Enter a unique name for your VDR, and then click Save.
  5. Your new VDR now appears in the My Resources list and is ready for transformations. See  Mapping and Transforming Fields to learn more about transformations.

Known issue: if you clone a VDR template into a new VDR, you cannot delete the new VDR and will receive an error. We are aware of this issue and are working to resolve it. As a workaround, clone the VDR template into a new VDR, give it a unique name, and ignore the VDR you want to delete. As a best practice, consider renaming the VDR you are trying to delete with a junk name, e.g. DoNotUseThisVDR, until it can be deleted.

About Levels

Within VDRs, the available fields are defined within a hierarchy of three levels, each with their own sets of privileges and access: organization, account, and instance. Fields defined at the account level are inherited by all users associated with a specific account, while fields defined at the instance level only apply to a specific element instance. See Introduction to Virtual Data Resources to learn more.
